I recently sat down with Katie Hendricks and David Holmquist to talk about one of my favorite events of the year: The Todd County Fair.
Your first thought might be, where is Todd County? Your second thought (if you know the answer to the first) would be, why do you love it so much?
The Todd County Fair holds a super special place in my heart. I was actually born during the Todd County Fair in 1995, so I am a literal fair child. My grandma was helping run the fair at the time, and I have fond memories of a giant Pooh bear stuffed animal that came from one of the game booths. I even grew up to work for Todd County Extension in high school as their summer interns, helping with operations on that side of things. I have spent countless hours on those fairgrounds and it holds a dusty, hot, sweaty place in my heart.
When Katie, who is on the fair board, reached out to me this spring about doing a podcast episode talking about the fair this year, I was all ears! We picked the Saturday of Memorial Weekend to record and all showed up that morning to blue skies, sunshine, and birds chirping.
We set up the recording gear in the historic grandstand, and proceeded to spend almost an hour chit chatting all about plans for this year’s event marking the 140th year. Some fun things to note from our conversation:
- Family Fun Night on Thursday with events for kids and kids at heart
- The PRCA Rodeo event happening Friday in the grandstand
- The Demo Derby on Saturday that draws in hundreds of cars
- The Truck and Tractor Pull on Sunday
- Live music from area bands and DJs
- Sweet corn feed
- Demonstrations of glass blowing, rug weaving, live electricity, blacksmithing and more
There has been a lot of hours of planning and prep for this year’s fair. The fair board has put in the extra effort to make this the event of the summer, and I can’t wait to check out all the fun things that are going on! Check out more events on the Todd County Fair website.
